Walk to the Arenal Volcano

The Arenal Volcano starts with a drive to the active north-western side of the volcano. Once there you will start on a hike through Las Coladas Trail which crosses the rain forest and goes over a large lava flow from 1992. It is possible to observe a great variety of plants, wildlife, and magnificent lava formations.

Once on top of the lava flow, you will have a beautiful view of the sunset over Arenal Lake. The hike ends at a viewing area where, if weather permits you will be able to see red hot lava rolling down. During the tour, our experienced guides will provide interesting and educational information regarding the history of the majestic mountain and the Arenal Volcano National Park. The tour ends with a relaxing stop at the hot springs (optional –entrance fee is not included).

Combination Tour

This tour, which begins at 7:30 a.m. gives you the opportunity, in a single day, to enjoy all attractions that we have at the Arenal region!

To Start the tour you have the choice to visit Eco Centro Danaus or the Arenal Hanging Bridges. At the Eco Center you will observe and learn about the natural history of the butterflies of Costa Rica such as the Blue Morpho and the Monarca. You will also see a wide variety of tropical plants and traditional crops being farmed organically.

The Hanging Bridges consist of a 1.9 mile (3.1 km) hike trough a trail where you can enjoy the rain forest flora and fauna. The trail crosses nine fixed bridges and six suspension bridges and is laid out at a maximum grade of seven degrees so anyone can do it. Our next stop is La Fortuna Waterfall. From the trailhead you will hike approximately 15 minutes before reaching this majestic waterfall, where you can swim or just enjoy it’s beauty. Lunch is next and will be in La Fortuna town. Following lunch you’ll have the opportunity to rest until 3:00 p.m. before starting the Volcano hike. We will choose one of several trails depending on which side of the volcano the lava is coming down, on all the trails you will see a wide variety of plants and wildlife. At Los Tucanes trail you will have the opportunity to walk on old lava flow and on trails, at the end of the hike you will enjoy the sunset, waiting until dark hopping to see and hear the glowing chunks of lava tumbling down the side of the mountain, a sight you won’t soon forget. You’ll end the day with your choice of a relaxing dip in the Hot Springs followed by a buffet dinner.

Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge

The Caño Negro Wildlife refuge is considered the best site on the continent for bird watching. In addition to an abundance of birds, Caño Negro is also home to many exciting animals, such as sloths, three types of monkeys, caimans, lizards, bats and a wide variety of flora native to the wetlands.

Our tour to this beautiful region leaves from La Fortuna and takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to get to Los Chiles, a small village just five kilometers from the Nicaraguan border. It is here where we start our boat trip to the wetlands.

We will work our way slowly up stream stopping along the way as we see different bird and animal species. Around noon, we will stop along the river for a typical Costa Rican lunch before heading back to Los Chiles to take the bus back to La Fortuna.

Ecocentro Danaus Tour

This walk take place in a small reserve whose focus is conservation and education. You will see, The Butterfly Garden , whose purpose is the cultivation and the upbringing of butterflies in a scientific way, a place where they treat eggs, larves and pupas for exhibition, 30 different butterfly species in their natural state of living.

Botanic Garden, include more than 600 species of plants, such heliconias, orchids, palms, bromeliads, native trees, among others species of the tropical rain forest. Frogs observation, In this place it is possible to see tropical frogs, in particular Red Poisonous Frogs (Dendrobates pumilio) and the Red Eyes Frogs (Agalichnys callidryas).

The Ecocentro Danaus host a large biodiversity of mammals (Sloths, marsupials, Agoutis, Squirrels, Coatis, Coyotes) Reptiles (Caimans, Lizards, Snakes, Basiliscs), Great variety of insects and more than 150 different bird species. We offer a guided tour at night in which you can see and learn about the nocturnal behavior of the Tropical Rain Forest Wildlife.

Bird Watching

For those lovers of the birds, our tour will give you the opportunity to appreciate and to identify some of the species of the great biodiversity of Costa Rica.

Birds are most active early in the morning and in the afternoon. Join us for one or both of these walks for an amazing display of tropical birds. You will have the opportunity to see toucans, parrots, oropéndolas, colorful tanagers and parakeets.

For the more experienced bird watcher we can focus on looking for Royal Flycatchers, White Fronted Nunbirds, Cinamon Woodpeckers and other less commonly seen species. We will adapt the tour for you. We will finish up the tour by listing and discussing the bird we have seen.

Venado Caves

For those who don’t mind getting wet and muddy, this fascinating underground adventure will take you through a labyrinth of passages and chambers in which you will see interesting rock formation called, “La Papaya”, stalactites, stalagmites, bats, spiders and evidence that the caves were at one time at the bottom of the ocean. The caves are located only 45 minutes from La Fortuna. We recommend bringing an extra set of dry clothes.

Cerro Chato Expedition

We begin the journey by traveling moving from La Fortuna around the Volcán Arenal to the hotel Observatory Lodge", where we begin the walk toward the Cerro Chato through a very dense primary forest. While there we visit the lake, where you can swim, take pictures and get to know the surroundings. After that, we continue our descent surrounded by a very dense forest where birds, plants, animals, immense trees and insects can be appreciated and one can feel the sensation of freedom of this beautiful landscape. We can also enjoy San Carlos Valley as well as the Arenal Volcano view.

The walk will end at La Fortuna Waterfall, where we will descend to the river and enjoy beautiful natural landscape. After a refreshing swim we return to La Fortuna.

Río Celeste

We leave at 7:00 a.m. from La Fortuna. We will have a typical breakfast on the way to Río Celeste located in the Volcán Tenorio National Park, where we will begin a walk of 7 kilometers. (4 hours, approximately) through the rain forest. We will visit the place called “Los Teñideros", in this place we will find two sprins of blue crystal water, reason why this name was given.

On the way back we walk for a path where we will find “Ollas “these are fumaroles full with mud. In the itinerary of the walk the gases of high temperatures are observed as well as thermal waters. We will continue walking until arriving to a beautiful waterfall with their crystal waters of celestial color.

We conclude our journey with an exquisite lunch.

Arenal Hanging Bridge

This tour takes place on a 600 acre reserve filled with lush vegetation and a variety of birds and animals which your experienced guide will help you spot.

The trail itself is 1.9 miles in length, crossing nine fixed bridges and 6 suspension bridges.

Children Rain Forest

After breakfast we start our tour. To arrive to this destination we drive for about 45 minutes in minibus and later we will continue in a 4x4 car for 1 hour to the scientific station of Pocosol, driving around a volcanic lake at an altitude of 1.100 meters.

We will hike on the trails for about 4 hours to admire the surrounding ecosystem of primary forest and small volcanic fumaroles.

The station of Pocosol was built with the purpose of housing investigators; however, it has the basic necessities for tourists. This station is property of the Reservation Eternal Forest of The Children that is administered by the Monteverde´s Concervationist Asociation, and it is classified as one of the most important and oldest private reservations in Central America protecting more than 17.000 hectares.

On the paths and with our nature guide we will discover different species of animals as the deer, the pecari, the bustling monkeys, congos and birds like the toucan, the oriole, and different humming birds, also the bird parasol, nests in these forests.

Juan Castro Blanco National Park

This tour is a great new alternative for bird watching enthusiasts. The trip to this rarely visited cloud forest will give you the opportunity to see a wide variety of flora and fauna including the spectacular Quetzal with its eye-catching plumage and many other bird species.

When many people think of the Costa Rican cloud forest Monteverde is the first name that comes to mind but those that take this tour will quickly find that Costa Rica has much more to offer than just Monteverde. To reach the Juan Castro Blanco National Park which is located only 1 ½ hours from La Fortuna we will drive through the San Carlos lowlands, Costa Rica’s most productive agricultural region. The small number of tourists that visit the park, the personalized nature of the tour and the area’s beauty make for an excellent combination. Many of the San Carlos lowlands’ most prominent rivers have their origins in the park as do many of the most of the important aquifers in the area. The total area of the park which was created by decree in 1992 is 14,250 hectares (approximately 35,600 acres).

The most common species of fauna found in the park are birds such as the Quetzal, Crested Guan, Black Guan and Chachalaca and mammals such as the Red Brocket Deer, White Faced Capuchin Monkey, Armadillo, Paca, Tapir and several cat species. The park has a very diverse array of flora with approximately 60% of the park’s total area being covered by primary forest and the remainder consisting of patches of secondary forest. The tour will end with a delicious lunch with trout as the main course.

Monteverde in 1 day

We will begin the tour at 7 a.m when our transportation will pick you up at your hotel in La Fortuna to drive you to Arenal Lake, Then you take a boat for 15 minutes to the other side of the lake and there we change transportation to a minibus that will take us to Monteverde.

Once in The Reserve you will have the option of choosing among making the SKY TREK or SKY WALK where you will have the opportunity to appreciate the great beauty of the Cloud Forest area, characterized by their enormous quantity and variety of flora and fauna.

Then we will take lunch in Santa Elena's town. After we continue with our journey in Monteverde, where we will visit the Botanical Garden so you will be able to appreciate more easily the great variety of plants that compose The Reservation.

Around 3:30 p.m. will begin our return to La Fortuna.
